RILEY, Jacqueline C. 5/17/1930 - 1/27/2015

We are blessed! Jacqueline Charlene Duffy Riley (Jackie), daughter, sister, godmother, aunt, bride, mother, friend, SF 49er Fan, and her favorite role: Grandy, is now watching over us in spirit. She passed of good old natural causes Tuesday, January 27, 2015.

We imagine her adoring husband of 47 years, John Richard Riley (Dick) greeting her with a tall vodka, tonic & lime, and announcing: "Hot Damn - It's about time!" He predeceased her in 2000. Jackie is missed deeply by two proud daughters: Erin & Sandra, their husbands, Donald Celli and Paul Grimshaw, grandchildren Tara Zachary, Christopher and Hayley. Jackie's nieces Debra Barbano Lampen, Lori Barbano Chester and Annette Barbano Blair brightened her last days with their visits and trips down memory lane.

Born at Children's Hospital in San Francisco, May 17,1930 to Honard and Dorothy Duffy and joining older sister Diane. She was an excellent ice skater, talented pianist and Rainbow Girl. After college, she became an accountant with the Naval Supply Center in Alameda, where she was elected Miss NSC of 1951. The NSC Officer's Club was fateful, as that was where she met her future father-in-law, John Sherman Riley, who had the good sense to introduce Jackie to his handsome son. Dick referred to that introduction as "dumb luck". They married in 1954.

Dick's insurance career took them from San Francisco to Sacramento, Ft. Wayne, Indiana, and ultimately back to Sacramento in 1973. In each city, they enjoyed an active social life including book club, bridge, hosting cocktail parties, cooking and gardening. The midwest provided idylic childhoods for their daughters, yet the adults chose to return to California when the harsh winters and humid summers lost their appeal. Jackie re-entered the work force in the mid-1970s as an office manager for a trucking company, and swiftly became president of BayView Trucking (Officially allowing Jackie to refer to herself as: "Mother Trucker").

Dick and Jackie returned to SF in the mid-1980s where she worked for top architecural firms Sandy & Babcock along with Burt & Dulay on historic Maiden Lane. Later, they returned to Sacramento, where she proudly landed at David Allen and Associates. Retirement did not slow Jackie down as she volunteered for Ombudsman, St. Ignatius Parish, Assistance League of Sacramento, until she finally, really truly retired at 80 years of age, allowing herself more time for travel, theater and lunches with her numerous fun friends, including her Red Hats gals.

A Memorial Mass will be held on Saturday, February 7, 1:00 pm at St. Ignatius Loyola Parish, 3235 Arden Way. If so inclined, donations are welcome at either: St. Ignatius School Building Fund or Loyola Guild of Jesuit High School, Sacramento.
