Gwendolyn Anderson Harris, 62, of Charlottesville, VA passed away Friday, May 13, 2016, at UVA Medical Center surrounded by her family. She was born on May 22, 1953, in Charlottesville; Gwen was the daughter of Mary C. Anderson and the late Cuba Andrew Anderson Jr.

In addition to her father Gwen was preceded in death by her brother Cuba Andrew Anderson III; maternal grandmother, Helen Cyrus; and paternal grandmother, Cora Lee Anderson.

Gwen is survived by her mother, Mary C. Anderson, sister, Cynthia Ross, like a brother, Robert Smith; two daughters, Renne’ Harris and Rayshon Tibbs; and two sons, Reny “RJ” Harris II and wife, Adrienne, and Catrell Harris and wife, Nakia; 11 grandchildren: Daquan Harris, Dashon Tibbs, Daiquandra Harris, Michael Frazier, K-Knowledge Rawlings, Trevon Johnson, Ryen Harris, Aiden Harris, Mylacs Burruss, Messiah Harris, and Jahice McDonald; 1 great-grandchild, Dremani Harris; a niece, Dennicqua Anderson; a God-father, Grafton Payne; a God-Mother, Margaret White, and a host of other relatives and very special friends, Avery Gray, Bobby Green, Lottie Wynn, Vickie Block, Jeanne Pfaff, Johnetta Gordon and Carol Webb.

While a senior at Lane High School Gwen scored the winning touchdown for her team in the girls’ Powderpuff Football game. Gwen spent the first 10 years of her married life in Anchorage, Alaska. Gwen loved living in this "majestic state" and had many fond memories of her life there. Her middle 2 children were born in Anchorage, and it was there that she discovered her passion for working with children with special needs.

Upon returning to Charlottesville, Gwen spent the next 29 years working with both Charlottesville Parks and Recreation Department and Charlottesville City Schools. For many years, Gwen took great joy in playing Mrs. Claus at the annual Charlottesville Parks and Recreation Christmas Party. Gwen stated that her passion was working with special needs students. She worked with students at Greenbrier Elementary, Clark Elementary, Buford Middle School and Charlottesville High School.

She is fondly remembered for hosting many delicious luncheons for staff and co-workers. Her macaroni and cheese, potato salad and fried chicken are famous throughout the Charlottesville City School system. She catered the CHS Prom for several years and baked many decadent pies and cobblers for the CHS Black Knights Coffee Cart.

Gwen was fondly referred to as “Mama Harris”. She was a fierce advocate for those she loved, and loved her children passionately - her children at home, her children in the neighborhood, and her children at school. Gwen believed strongly in supporting all children and attended every CHS football and basketball game that she could. Gwen was a consistent advocate for all children and saw the good in everyone. She was dedicated to her church, Zion Union Baptist Church.

Gwen retired from Charlottesville City Schools this school year. Mama Harris you will be missed by all.

Funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. on Saturday, May 21, 2016, at Zion Union Baptist Church with the Reverend Lloyd Cosby officiating. Interment will follow at Riverview Cemetery.
