Gwen loved living in this "majestic state" and had many fond memories of her life there. Her middle 2 children were born in Anchorage, and it was there that she discovered her passion for working with children with special needs.
Upon returning to Charlottesville, Gwen spent the next 29 years working with both Charlottesville Parks and Recreation Department and Charlottesville City Schools. For many years, Gwen took great joy in playing Mrs. Claus at the annual Charlottesville Parks and Recreation Christmas Party. Gwen stated that her passion was working with special needs students. She worked with students at Greenbrier Elementary, Clark Elementary, Buford Middle School and Charlottesville High School.
She is fondly remembered for hosting many delicious luncheons for staff and co-workers. Her macaroni and cheese, potato salad and fried chicken are famous throughout the Charlottesville City School system. She catered the CHS Prom for several years and baked many decadent pies and cobblers for the CHS Black Knights Coffee Cart.
Gwen was fondly referred to as “Mama Harris”. She was a fierce advocate for those she loved, and loved her children passionately - her children at home, her children in the neighborhood, and her children at school. Gwen believed strongly in supporting all children and attended every CHS football and basketball game that she could. Gwen was a consistent advocate for all children and saw the good in everyone. She was dedicated to her church, Zion Union Baptist Church.
