Harold Holt Woodbury, Sr.

Harold H. Woodbury, Sr., 86 of Pearisburg, VA. One of the great salesmen packed his bag and headed home to his eternal rest with his Savior on Sunday, Sept. 1, 2013.

Harold H. Woodbury, Sr. was a leading agent with the Prudential Insurance Co. during his 20-year career and was consistently among the top 100 producers company-wide.

Born on March 30, 1927, in Lowell MA., Harold was the eldest of Arthur and Irene (Holt) Woodbury's three sons. In 1941 he moved to Pearisburg VA with his family. Harold immediately felt at home in this community and never left. After graduating from Pearisburg High School and Bliss Electrical School, Harold began his career in the appliance business. He operated Woodbury Radio and T.V. until age forty when he embarked on his second career with Prudential.

Harold's gift of talking with people coupled with genuine caring allowed him to become one of their most successful agents and a wonderful friend to all.

On June 14, 1950, Harold married the love of his life, Lelia Estelle Whittaker of Eggleston, VA. They raised three children while staying very active in the life of Giles Co. and beyond. Harold and Estelle were charter members of Redeemer Lutheran Church in Pearisburg. Harold served as president of the Pearisburg Kiwanis Club, the Giles Co. United Way, the Giles County Chamber of Commerce, his church council, and the Montgomery Co. Assoc. of Life Underwriters.

In addition, he was a VA. State board member of the National Assoc. of Life Underwriters. He was an active Gideon for ten years. After retirement, he enjoyed assisting young entrepreneurs in the Junior Achievement Program. Known for his unbridled enthusiasm, Harold may have been the most avid Giles High Spartan fan ever, plus he never gave up on his Redskins.

However, more than anything else, he cherished his family, his Lord, and his friends. Harold was preceded in death by his parents, Arthur J. Woodbury and Irene Holt Woodbury; brothers, Dr. Phillip S. Woodbury and Dr. Edgar Christenson (Chris) Woodbury; along with his beloved wife Estelle, who passed away on Jan. 25, 2012. He is survived by his three children and their spouses, H. Holt Woodbury, Jr. and his wife Karen; Barbara Woodbury Watson and husband Tom and Frederick Arthur (Fred) Woodbury; seven grandchildren, Harold H. (Trace) Woodbury III, Halie D. Rodgers, Erin Watson Weldon, Anna Watson Mwangi, Christy Watson Lam, Jenny Watson Fitzgerald and Walker H. Woodbury; three sisters-in-law, Virginia Whittaker, Linda Woodbury and Becky Woodbury; ten great-grandchildren, and a host of beloved nieces and nephews.

A celebration of Harold's life will be held on Sat. Sept. 7, 2013, at the Pembroke United Methodist Church. Visitation will be from 11:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at the Church with the memorial service following at 1:00 p.m. Family will also receive friends at a reception after the service. Gifts may be made to the Gideon's or to Redeemer Lutheran Church. Arrangements are being handled by Givens Funeral Home in Pearisburg, Va.
