James Benz
James Edward Benz, 62 of Centerville died Friday at St Joseph's Hospital in Centerville.
He was born April 16, 1926 to Charles W. and Anna M. Erickson Benz in Udell. He married Ruth McCoy in Udell on June 23, 1946, and she survives.
He served in the Merchant Marines during WWII. He was an active member of the First Baptist Church of Centerville and the American Farm Bureau. He served for four years on the community committee and nine years on the county committee of the ASCS. He was a long time dairy farmer and was chosen outstanding young farmer by the Centerville Junior Chamber of Commerce. The Benz's received the Farm Family of the year Award at the 1974 Alfalfa Banquet. In March 1988 the Farm Bureau honored him for his many years of service with a trip to San Diego and nearby farming areas.
He is survived by his wife Ruth; two daughters Judy (Dale) Kiesz of Seattle, Wash.; Barbara (John) Bowen of Spencer, Ia.; a son John (Goldie) Benz of Ottumwa; six grandchildren; three sisters, Mary Eckiss of Mission, Texas, Doris Culbertson of Centerville, Lelah Belle Alden of Wilmington, Ohio; five brothers, Carl of Silver Spring, Md., Lee of Moravia, Ray of Mt. Pleasant, Texas, Henry of Numa, Richard of Altoona, and Lavern of Moline, Ill. ; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by two brothers, Glen and Gerald, and his parents.
Funeral services were held Sunday at 2 p.m. at the First Baptist Church in Centerville with the Rev. Roger Goodson officiating. Burial was in the Sharon Chapel Cemetery south of Centerville. Visitation was Saturday from7-8 at the Johnson-Lange Funeral Home.
A memorial has been established to the First Baptist Church building fund or the Sharon Chapel Cemetery Association and may be left at the funeral home.
