Sherry Lynn (Burdick) Powell, 75, of Torrington and formerly a longtime resident of Sandy Hook, died peacefully on Saturday, May 14, surrounded by her loving family. Born in Brookfield on January 10, 1941, she was the daughter of the late Lois (Smith) Burdick and Leon Burdick.

Sherry married her soul mate, George A. Powell Jr., six months after meeting him in 1964. They were married at St. Rose of Lima Church and lived in a home on Hawley Pond early in their marriage.

She worked for Dual Lite and later Taunton Press while raising her family in Newtown and Sandy Hook. She was a longtime member of the Sandy Hook Volunteer Fire Department Ladies Auxiliary, also serving as its president. Vacations and other commitments in June were always scheduled around her favorite event—the annual Lobster Fest.

Known as "Grammy" and "Gram" to her four grandchildren and all of their friends, she was adored for her sense of humor, melodramatic card play and countless thoughtful gestures. Each grandchild had a close and special relationship with her that will forever shape their lives.
An artist and poet at heart, Sherry will be remembered for her love of Halloween and all things autumn, her incomparable holiday meals and her devotion to family and friends.

Pre-deceased by her husband of 40 years, she is survived by daughter Chris and husband David Dotson of Broomfield, CO; daughter April and husband Michael Carchietta of Torrington, CT; Grandson Vincent of Southbury and Granddaughter Sabyl of Torrington; Granddaughters Avery and Addison of Broomfield, CO; siblings Phillip Burdick and wife Grace of Brookfield; Francis Burdick and wife Carol of Danbury; sister and partner-in-crime Gail and husband Jon Niles of South Carolina. Brothers Alan and Richard Burdick and a sister Fayleen Sauer pre-deceased her.

Family and friends may call at the Honan Funeral Home, 58 Main Street, Newtown, on Thursday, May 19th from 4:00-7:00pm. Funeral services will be held at St. Rose of Lima Church, 46 Church Hill Road, Newtown, on Friday, May 20th at 10:30am. Interment will follow in St. Rose Cemetery, Sandy Hook.
