Walter McAllister “Doc” Reid passed away on Tues., May 10, 2016, at Mayo Clinic Health System in Eau Claire, Wisconsin. His curiosity, intellect and generosity of spirit will be dearly missed.

Doc was born on June 4, 1943, in Washington D.C., the son of Sibbald and Louise F. Reid. Doc grew up in Springville, Utah, and graduated Wasatch Academy in Mt. Pleasant, Utah. He earned a Masters Degree at the University of Utah and went on to teach for a year at the State University in Marquette, Michigan. Doc then went on to earn his doctorate in mathematics at the University of Colorado in Boulder, Colorado, while enjoying folk dancing with his many friends.

Doc came to Eau Claire in 1981 where he enjoyed teaching in the mathematics department at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire for 32 years before his retirement in 2013. He married Barbara DeVries in 1997 and they enjoyed many years together in Eau Claire. Doc co-founded the Eau Claire Folk Dancers and served on the Bicycle and Pedestrian Advisory Committee, working to make Eau Claire a bicycle and pedestrian friendly city. Doc also helped found the Trialogue, an ongoing series of discussions with members of the Jewish, Christian and Islamic faiths as well as others, to study various religions and teach tolerance.

Doc was a lifelong learner, always curious and open to new ideas. He was a true bibliophile, reading 10 – 17 books at any one time and finding a newly published one to read almost daily. In his retirement, he took up the study of German, founding the Eau Claire Stammtisch and continued his passion for learning by attending classes in the foreign language and physics departments at UW-Eau Claire. Over the years, Doc also sponsored children through Children International and is leaving a legacy to the organization to continue supporting their work with children across the globe. In his death, Doc’s generosity continues as a tissue donor with the Wisconsin Tissue Foundation.

Doc is survived by his former wife Barbara Reid, his brother John (Barbara) Reid, cousins, brothers and sisters-in-law, nieces and nephews, and many lifelong friends.

A memorial service will be held at 6 p.m. on Tues., May 17, 2016, at Fuller-Speckien-Hulke Funeral Home in Eau Claire, Wisconsin. Memorial visitation will be from 3 p.m. until the time of service.
