Father was Oliver H. Perry McGinnis, usually just mentioned as O. H. P. McGinnis. He had been a postmaster at Young's Settlement and was active in county politics. Young's Settlement was a community that became extinct when the railroad went past a few miles to the north and the community moved to modern day Elgin. He married Lena's mother after the death of his first wife in 1868. He remarried again after the death of Lena's mother and moved to Houston after the death of his third wife.

Lena's mother, Anna M. (Coats) McGinnis died from childbirth the month that Lena was born. (U.S. Federal Census Mortality Schedules, 1850-1885)

The 1870 census, taken in June, recorded Anna M. [Lena], 7 months living with grandparents Will Coetze [Coats], 69, and Sarah, 74, and also with father O. H. P. McGinnis.

The 1880 census recorded Lena Keeble, 10, living on a farm in Bastrop County, Texas, with grandfather William Coats, 79, Sarah Coats, 84, and cousin Joe Rivers, 17.

Lena McGinnis married Walter Keeble Sept. 13, 1886, in Bastrop County, Texas

Note: Name spelling Melina taken from death certificate of son Leslie. Grandfather William Coats spelled it both Malina and Malena in his will.
