Mr. Stevens passed away peacefully surrounded by his loving family on Friday May 13, 2016 in the rehab unit at Spring Valley Care Center, following a lengthy illness with COPD.
Gayle William Stevens was born on March 28, 1947 in Jefferson, Iowa to Kenneth and Pearl (Baugh) Stevens. He grew up on a farm in rural Jefferson before moving with his family as a young boy to rural Grand Meadow. Following the death of his father, Pearl and her children moved to Stewartville where G.W. graduated from Stewartville High School in 1965. In 1966 G.W. enlisted into the U.S. Air Force proudly serving his country for eight tears including duty overseas. Following his Honorable discharge with the rank of Staff Sergeant, he served for seven years with the Minnesota National Guard. In 1968 he married Sharon Malone and they were later divorced.
After the service, G.W. was employed with the city of Stewartville and also served as a firefighter with the Stewartville Fire Department, worked as a probation officer in Ocala, Fla., was in management at the Kahler Hotel in Rochester for 18 years and worked at the All American Co-Op in Stewartville.
G.W. also enjoyed farming with his stepdad, Bill Henke.
In 1992, G.W. met the love of his life, Deb Mathews and they were married on June 30, 2001 at Ironwood Springs in Stewartville. They have made their home together in rural Racine. He enjoyed hunting and fishing, summers in Waterville, Minn., boating on Lake Sakatah, going antiquing with Deb and many family vacations up North.
G.W. will be remembered as a kind and generous man who deeply loved his family and enjoyed being with his friends. He could carry on long conversations with anyone that he met. His gift of gab, jokes and one-liners will be truly missed. He made an impact on everyone he met up until his passing.
An extensive list of survivors can be seen at the Griffin-Gray Funeral Home site.
He was preceded in death by his father, Kenneth, stepfather Bill Henke, brother Gary Stevens, grandparents and many aunts and uncles.
A time of visitation will take place from 9AM to 10:30AM at Autumn Ridge Church in Rochester on Wednesday morning. A celebration of G.W.'s life will continue at 5PM Wednesday at the Stewartville American Legion. Everyone is invited!
Obbituary was published by Griffin-Gray and arrangements were made by them. Published in The Post-Bulletin on May 16, 2016.
