Joe L. Pitts was born October 30, 1925 at Bronson, Kansas to Otis and Bertha (Corns) Pitts. He grew up in Fort Scott, Kansas where he graduated from high school. During World War II he served in the U S Navy, and was stationed at various places around the word. At wars end, he went to work for the Boeing Aircraft Corp. and later for the Civil Air Patrol.
On February 23, 1953 he married Stella Joy Shelton at Altus, Oklahoma and they lived in various places in California, Arizona and New Mexico, before making their home in Newberry Springs, California in 1977. Joe and Stella owned and operated the Tastee Freez in Belen, New Mexico for nine years before becoming employed for the Santa Fe Railroad. Following his retirement in 1986, Joe and Stella became full time R.V.'ers spending the winter months in San Felipe, Baja Mexico, where they had acquired duel citizenship.
Mr. Pitts died August 2,2000 at Belen, New Mexico at the age of 74 years, nine months, and three days.
He was preceded in death by his wife Stella in August 1998, his son David, two brothers, Sam and Bill and his parents.
Joe is survived by two sons, Keith Pitts and his wife Stephanie of Belen, Mew Mexico and Neal Pitts of Edgewood, New Mexico, a daughter, Dana Wright of Belen New Mexico; five grandchildren, Joeanne, David, Shannon, Brandy and Joel; four great grandchildren, Robert, Joenie, Jerry Joseph and Daniel; two sisters, Julie Jones of Tulsa, Oklahoma and Darlene Hale and her husband, Charles of Oceanside California and other relatives and friends.
