Peter B. Cooper died on May 12, 2016 in Manhattan, Kansas. He had been a resident of Manhattan since 1966.

Peter was born March 30, 1936 in Manchester, Connecticut, the son of Ralph Griswold Cooper and Dorothy Bruce Cooper. He was raised in Colebrook, Connecticut, where he attended local schools.

He earned his Bachelor of Science, Masters of Science and Doctoral degrees from Lehigh University in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, where he began teaching at the university level.

Peter moved his family to Manhattan in 1966 to join the Kansas State University faculty in the Department of Civil Engineering. Throughout his 33 years of dedicated service at K-State, the College of Engineering and the Civil Engineering Department, Peter taught scores of classes, advised hundreds of undergraduate and graduate students, and was promoted to Professor in 1974.

His research primarily focused on the strength and behavior of plate-girders and of steel beams with web openings, and he published a number of papers and book chapters on related topics. He served on numerous department, college and university committees and had been an active member of the American Society of Civil Engineers and the Kansas Engineering Society. He retired from K-State in 1999.

A long-time fan of K-State athletics, Peter served as official scorer for the men’s home basketball games for 33 years and rarely missed a home football game.
He was a charter member and avid supporter of the Manhattan Chapter of the Barbershop Harmony Society and entertained local audiences as a member of the Little Apple Chorus and the Manhattan Music Machine Quartet.

Peter married Helen Gabriella Kolmar Cooper of Coopersburg, Pennsylvania on May 21, 1960 in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania. Helen survives at their home in Manhattan. In addition to Helen, Peter is survived by two daughters, Susan Cooper and her husband, Eric Klier of Hockessin, Delaware, and Patricia Cooper, of Washington, D.C. He doted on his two grand-daughters, Elizabeth Klier of Seattle, Washington and Emma Klier of Hockessin, Delaware. His younger brother, David Cooper of Asheville, North Carolina, also survives him; his older sister Mary Cooper Falcone preceded him in death.

A memorial service will be held at 11:00 AM on Saturday, May 21 at the Yorgensen-Meloan-Londeen Funeral Home, located at 1616 Poyntz Avenue in Manhattan. A second memorial service and inurnment will be held in Colebrook, Connecticut later this Summer.
