Jack Stewart and Alma Neuhausen Laney 1918 - 2016 San Diego Jack Stewart Laney died May 12, 2016, at the age of 95, after a six-month battle with the effects of a stroke. Alma E. (Neuhausen) Laney, his wife of 72 years, followed on September 19, 2016. She was 98.
Jack, born in Torrington, Wyoming, on October 18, 1920, graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy in the Class of 1944, a year early in 1943 due to World War II. He retired a Senior Captain in 1973.
Alma, born in Baltimore on May 25, 1918, was a Navy Nurse when she met Jack at the Naval Academy. Jack served as the head of the Science Department at the Naval Academy. He earned his wings in 1945 and was a career Naval Aviator, flying all over the world. In addition to being stationed in Virginia and California, the Laneys lived and traveled extensively all over the world. After retiring from the Navy, Jack counseled Navy men and women in their transition to civilian life and later served as Director of the Reuben H. Fleet Science Center until 1982. The Laneys were long-term residents of San Diego. They loved their home in Del Cerro and were active participants in the San Diego community.Jack and Alma were cremated and their ashes buried in the City of Odessa Cemetery in Odessa, Washington (about 40 miles west of Spokane) among a large number of extended family members.Jack and Alma are survived by their two children, Jack Terry Laney (Mary) from Kent, Washington, and Marjorie Doll Fisher (Jim) from Huachuca, Arizona; 4 grandchildren and 7 great-grandchildren.A memorial service to commemorate their lives will be held at Ascension Lutheran Church at 1 p.m. on Saturday, March 4, 2017. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that you make a donation to:Navy-Marine Corps Relief Society.
