He immigrated to Canada from Ireland in 1830 and first settled in the Township of Nepean, Carleton, County, Ontario, near Ottawa. He remained there until 1834 when he came up to what was then the forest primeval, now known as Pembroke. He farmed land until his death. In 1853 his farm was swept by the terrible fire which devastated a large territory of this section. He was the first assessor of the township when it was organized and was Township Clerk for 20 years. He was also elected Reeve for a number of years and one of the original trustees of the Pembroke Methodist Church, which he held until his death in May 1900. He was prematurely listed on the 1901 Census, but was struck, with the notation "Dead".
