Retired Command Sgt. Maj. Robert F. McKown Sr., 74, of the 4000 block of Bonney Road, passed away August 3, 2001.

Mr. McKown was a 1944 graduate of Norview High School and attended RPI in Richmond. He retired as a command sergeant major after 44 years of service in October 1987. He was the recipient of the Legion of Merit twice. A member of Emmanuel Episcopal Church in Virginia Beach, he was past president of the Kempsville Lions Club and past president of Douglas MacArthur Chapter, AUSA. He was preceded in death by his loving wife, Mary Louise McKown, who passed away in 1982 after 28 years of marriage.

Survivors include his daughter, Mary Beth Donner and her husband, Michael L. Donner Sr., of Alexandria, Va.; his son, Robert F. McKown Jr. of Santa Fe, N.M.; his brother, E.P. McKown Jr.; his sisters, Lorene Ford and Belva Jordan; his brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Charles and Jane Cappleman; grandchildren, Ryan W. Stewart and Andrew P. Kidder; many nieces and nephews; and numerous loving and supportive friends.

A graveside service with full military honors will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday in Colonial Grove Memorial Park. Friends may join the family from 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at Smith and Williams Funeral Home, Kempsville Chapel.
