James Marcus Snyder was born in Preble county, Ohio on 1 Aug 1842, the oldest child of William Augustus Snyder and Belinda Matilda Hasty Snyder. James moved with his parents to Whitley County, Indiana in 1852. James married Elisabeth Shank on 3 Dec 1874 in Larwell, Whitley, Indiana. They had four daughters and two sons:

1. Rosa May Belinda (1878-1948), m. John Franklin Bogle
2. Mary Inez Sophia (1884-1945), m. Archie Ward Deen
3. Nettie Eldora Easter (1886-1948), m. Walter Howard Rogers
4. Flora Matilda Jane (1887-1973), m. Charles Lester Bogle
5. Marcus Elmer Leroy (1890-1958), m. Lena Apel
6. Clarence Loel October (1894-1966), m. Zoe Leora Leeper
