This is a newspaper account of Mrs. Sponenberg's death, taken from " The Mt. Carmal Ledger" Nov 4, 1893:

" Horribly Mutilated
A young woman from Bear Gap killed at Hazelton.
The city newspaper on Wednesday contained an account of a horrible accident which occured at Hazelton the day previous, in which Mrs Harvey Sponenberg a daughter of Wm. Yeagerof Bear Gap met a sad death. With her husband, Mrs Sponenberg was driving into Hazelton from there country home, and crossing a railroad track in the suburbs of the city were run down by a rapidly moving freight engine. Mr. Sponenberg escaped with slight injuries but his wife was instantly killed.
Mrs Sponenberg was but 17 years of age and until a year ago lived with her parents at Bear Gap. About that time her future husband came into the vicinity to work at the Bear Gap Water Company's new reservoir. He soon fell in love with Miss Yeager and gained her consent to become his wife. But the parents of the girl objected and the only resort left to her mine was to flee from home with her lover. This they did and started housekeeping on a farm near Hazelton. The parents of Mrs. Sponenbergdid not learn of her whereabouts until they received a telegram on Wednesday announcing her death.
Deceased's body was brought to Mt. Carmel yesterday morning on the 9:30 L V train and taken thence to Bear Gap for interment."

It appears her parents, William and Lucinda Yeager didnt reconize her marriage, and buried her under her maiden name.

Edit 2/2007: After reviwing other newspaper articles, it appears Mr. Sponenberg lied about being married to Miss Yeager in an effort to collect money for damages.
