Sturgis; Stanley R. PERSING, 79 of Sturgis, Mich., died Saturday, March 16, 2002, at his home.

He was born Aug. 7, 1922, in Sturgis, the second son of Leslie and Daisy (KIMBALL) PERSING.

On March 17, 1950, he married Dorothy Ann STURGIS in Angola, Ind.

Stan retired in 1985 from Ross Laboratories after 35 years of employment. At that time he also retired from the St. Joseph Sheriff's Department as a part time volunteer patrol officer, serving in that position for nearly 20 years.

He was a lifelong resident of Sturgis and attended Sturgis High School. In February of 1941 he enlisted in the United States Navy. He served on the destroyers USS Duncan and the USS Goff. He was discharged from the Navy in 1946 with the rank of Coxwain and served in the European African Campaign, the Asiatic Pacific Campaign and the American Area Campaign. He received the Presidential Unit Citation, the WW II Victory Medal and the American Defense Medal.

Stan was a Life member of Captain John J. Kelly Post #1355 VFW and was a member of the Neuman-Wenzel Post #73 American Legion and the Historical Society of Sturgis.

He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Dorothy; a son and daughter-in-law, Richard and Susan PERSING, Sturgis; a daughter, Jackie PERSING, Sturgis; 3 grandchildren, Scott and his wife, Jenny PERSING of Seattle, Wash., Jeremy PERSING of Denver, Colo., and Rich and his wife, Theresa PERSING of Sturgis; 2 great-grandchildren, Paige and Noah PERSING; a brother, Rouland E. PERSING, Sturgis; and 2 nieces, Bonnie (PERSING) ANDERSON of Marshall and Patty TOMPKINS, Mendon.

Preceding him in death were his parents, and one brother, Irving K. PERSING.

Stan enjoyed the outdoors, nature and camping. He especially enjoyed the upper part of our great state. He was gifted in art, drawing and cartooning. He also enjoyed his CB radio and the friends he met over the years. He endured a lifetime of pranks from friends but gave equally in return. He lived life to the fullest and enjoyed all those around him. He gave his family a spirit filled with humor and integrity and found joy in simple pleasures. He was our Hero, and we will miss him terribly.

Friends and relatives may call after 2 p.m. Tuesday at the Hackman-Foglesong Funeral Home of Sturgis where the family will receive friends from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Funeral services celebrating the life of Stanley PERSING will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. The Rev. Robert Keim, associate pastor of the First United Methodist Church is Sturgis will officiate. A graveside committal will follow the service at Oak Lawn Cemetery in Sturgis where Captain John J. Kelley Post #1355 VFW will confer full military rites.

The family suggests those wishing to make a memorial donation in Mr. PERSING'S memory consider Hospice of Sturgis or the Salvation Army. Envelopes are available at the funeral home.
