He was a graduate of Yale University in New Haven, Connecticut in 1804. He removed to Louisburg, North Carolina where he was the first principal of the Franklin Male Academy. Under his leadership, the academy grew; it later became Louisburg College. Matthew resigned in 1808 to start the study of law, which was interrupted by his sudden death in 1809. He never married.

This memorial is a cenotaph. Matthew is buried in the Edwards Family Cemetery in Franklin County, North Carolina. His family in Connecticut purchased and shipped a marble headstone from Somers, Connecticut to New Bern, North Carolina; it then went by wagon or cart to the cemetery in Franklin County, North Carolina. His family was content to have this be his final resting place.
