Charles Edward Shafer, Sr., 84, passed away Friday, August 14. 2015 in Houston, Texas. Charles was born August 23, 1930 to parents William and Vera (Kirkpatrick) Shafer in Shreveport, Louisiana.

He served his country in the United States Navy. After his time in the Navy, Charles continued to serve his community as a police officer in Galena Park in the 1970's. Charles married Bertie Mae in 1952 and they enjoyed 48 years together, raising their family in the city they both loved, until she preceded him in death in 2000. Charles was a caring husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather and he was very family oriented. He loved spending time with his family and enjoyed teaching his grandchildren some of his favorite pastimes including fishing and squirrel hunting. He also enjoyed playing pool, listening to country music, and staying active, always doing something. Charles will also be remembered for his light-hearted, positive attitude and sense of humor.

Charles is preceded in death by his parents; step-father, John William "Bud" Marrs, whom he loved as a father; his wife, Bertie Mae Shafer; and sons, Richard Darrell Shafer and Ricky Vernon Shafer. Left to cherish his memory are his children, Linda Shafer, Charles Edward Shafer, Jr., and wife Jeannie, Roy Eugene Shafer and wife Lavita, Roger Shafer and wife Grace; grandchildren, Billy Ray Price, Staci Caywood, Kelly Michelle, Heather Denise, Charles Jr., Amy Shuptrine, Roy Jr., Misty Rose, Elizabeth, Roger, Jr., and 20 great-grandchildren. he is also survived by his step-sister, Debbie Blevins. Friends are welcome to join the family for visitation from 3:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Thursday, August 20th at Carter Funeral Home. Funeral Services officiated by Pastor Glenda Guthrie will be held at 1:30 p.m. Friday, August 21, 2015 in the chapel of Carter Funeral Home. Graveside services will immediately follow at San Jacinto Memorial park, Houston, Texas, under the direction of Carter Funeral Home.
