James was born on June 18, 1923, in Chicago, Illinois, to Aaron G. and Theresa Quinn Bartz. He served in the U.S. Army in the European and Asia Pacific theaters during World War II. Mr. Bartz graduated from Butler University in Indianapolis in 1949.
James Bartz was married to Elizabeth L. Blackwell on April 19, 1952, at St. Joan of Arc Roman Catholic Church in Indianapolis. His career in ethical pharmaceuticals took the young and growing family to Chicago, Louisville, Wayland, MA, and Summit, NJ, where they lived for 30 years. The couple retired to Indianapolis in 1994.
Mr. Bartz is survived by his wife of 60 years, as well as seven children, Susan (Tom) Flanagan of Rowayton, CT; James (Teia) of Bellevue, WA; Kathleen (Jeff) Arbuckle of Wilmette, IL; Laura (Brian) Huber of Fort Washington, PA; Jerome (Loretta) of Greenville, NC; Kevin (Shelly) of Danville, CA; John (Michelle) of Dana Point, CA; and sixteen grandchildren.
His sister-in-law, Gunilla Bartz of Lake San Marco, CA and his cousin, Mary Alice Courtney of Chicago, IL also survive him. He was predeceased by his sister, Janet Marie Carlson, and brother, Robert Edmund.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Monday, September 24, 2012 at 11:30 a.m. in the St. Luke the Evangelist Catholic Church in Indianapolis. Calling begins at 10:30 a.m. at the church.
