Michael Briggs was born in Epsom and was a 1990 graduate of Pembroke Academy. He served in the US Marine Corps from 1991 to 1995. From the age of 12 until entering the Marine Corps, he worked at Yeaton Dairy Farm in Epsom. He began his career in law enforcement with the Hillsborough County Department of Corrections, and working part time as a police officer in Epsom before joining the Manchester Police Department in 2001. Friends and fellow officers describe him as kind, generous, friendly, caring, loyal and courageous. On July 25, 2004, Briggs was one of four officers who rushed into a burning apartment building and rescued its 19 residents. Among those he saved were a teenager, blind and confined to a wheelchair, and the elderly woman who cared for her. His family includes his wife Laura of nearly 12 years two children Brian and Mitchell, his parents; one brother, three sisters, and his maternal grandmother, Cecile Fisher. He was killed in the line of duty at age 35. Michael was originally buried in New Rye Cemetery in Epsom but was quietly re-interred September 2007 in the New Hampshire State Veterans Cemetery.
