Travis Ray Ivy, 91, of Axtell, passed away unexpectedly, Tuesday May 10, 2016.
Funeral Service: 10 A.M.Saturday May 14, 2016 at Lake Shore Funeral Home Chapel, Burial with military honors will follow at Sardis Cemetery in Leon County.
Travis was born November 24, 1924 in Jewett , Leon County, Texas first child of Rollie Roe & Alta Mae (DeBerry) Ivy. Travis was very proud of his roots in Leon Co. and was very grateful for his grandparents and extended families on both sides. Travis always said that he appreciated having had the good fortune to attend Jewett schools till the family moved to Waco. Which they did the summer after his junior year. He then graduate from Waco High. And soon after enlisted in the U.S. Navy, serving as a tail-gunner in World War II. While home on leave for Thanksgiving 1945, he meet and married Johnnie Ruth Porter after only 13 days! When he was discharged from the Navy, he and Johnnie decided to move back to Waco and Travis would try his hand at becoming a lawyer and enrolled at Baylor University. Shortly after the birth of his first child he decided that he was going to re-enlist in the US Navy. Travis then made the Navy his career, serving not only in WWII, but also in Korean and Vietnam conflicts. He loved the Navy and all of the opportunities that were afforded him. A life-long learner and teacher, he retired from the service after 24 years and moved his family back home to Waco. He became an Electronics Instructor at the brand new "Texas State Technical Institute". Travis was a part of TSTI for 15 years. Travis & Johnnie also owned and operated 25th St. Salvage in Waco for several years and Ivy's General Store in Leroy. After his 2nd retirement, Travis became an avid genealogist, and he lived by his motto: "Never Stop Learning."
He and his wife, Johnnie , recently celebrated 70 years of marriage!
He was preceded in death by his parents; and brothers, Sammy Eugene "Gene" Ivy and infant brother Donavan Dale Ivy.
Survivors include wife, Johnnie; 5 children; 15 grandchildren; and 32 great-grandchildren.
