Charles was the engineer of the east-bound (#6) Pere Marquette train and one of 22 persons who died in the "East Paris Train Wreck" which occurred on 26 December 1903 in Kent County, Michigan. The wreck involved east- (#6) and west-bound (#5) trains on the Pere Marquette Railway. Cause was said to be a westbound stop signal which was blown out by strong winds. Staff tried to alert a nearby farmer - probably to restore the signal - but they were unable to prevent the crash. The crash killed a total of 22 people and injured 40. The death certificate says he was buried in Grand Rapids, but was not specific
