Marine PVT Palmer Sherman Haraldson, lost during the battle of Tarawa in World War II, has now been accounted for.

PVT Haraldson was assigned to Company C, 1/6 of the 2nd Marine Division when they landed on Betio. Their mission was to secure the island in order to control the Japanese airstrip in the Tarawa Atoll; thereby preventing the Japanese Imperial forces from getting closer to the United States, and enabling US forces to get closer to mainland Japan. It would become one of the bloodiest battles in the Corps history.

It was November 22nd (D+2 for the "Battle of Tarawa"), when Palmer perished.

After the battle, those who died were buried in a number of battlefield cemeteries on the island. In 1946 and 1947, remains were recovered, but PVT Haraldson was not included.

In 2015, History Flight, Inc., a non-governmental organization, notified DPAA that they discovered an additional burial site on the island and recovered what they believed to be 35 sets of remains, including Palmer's; they also conducted genealogy research and provided the contact information enabling the Marine Corps to reach out to the surviving family members.

On May the 6th of 2016, the DPAA announced that lab analysis, in conjunction with the totality of circumstantial evidence available, established PVT Haraldson's remains were recovered at that time.

PVT Palmer Haraldson will be buried with full military honors at Memorial Park Cemetery in Fort Dodge, Iowa, on June 22, 2016. The memorial service will be at 1:30 p.m. on June 22, 2016, at Bruce Funeral Home in Fort Dodge followed by the burial. A reception will follow at the V.F.W. in Ft. Dodge.

Palmer's name is recorded on the Tablets of the Missing at the NCMP (55923333), an American Battle Monuments Commission cemetery, along with the others killed or lost in WWII. A rosette will be placed next to his name to indicate he has been accounted for.
