Robert Philip Hannah was born on October 18th, 1938, in Philadelphia, PA to Robert and Dorothy (Maxwell) Hannah. When Bob was young, his family moved to Michigan, where he graduated from Grosse Pointe High School in 1956. He continued his education at Wayne State University and later attended Seattle University where he received a Bachelor of Science Degree. He later went on to do postgraduate work at the University of Wisconsin-Madison and the University of Utah.
After college, Bob began teaching science in a private school in Seattle, where he met a vivacious young English teacher named Dava Callen. They were later married on October 21st, 1967 at Seattle First Free Methodist Church. After deciding to go into engineering, Bob began his career at Boeing working in aerospace. He and his wife later moved to Northfield, in 1969, where Bob took a job at Sheldahl. Later he spent 23 years working for Honeywell, and then its Defense Division, Alliant Tech Systems. While employed there, he spent a year and a half back in Seattle working for Marine Systems; Underseas Division, for the Navy. Because of Bob’s expertise in a variety of areas, he also did work for other companies such as HEI, Guidant and IBM. He served as President of the Twin Cities Rubber Group, a division of the American Chemical Society and IICIT, an international standards organization. Bob was also a member of Toastmasters.
Bob had knowledge and interests in so many fields. He loved classical music and as a young person, played the violin and French horn. He was an avid train buff and could tell you the wheel arrangement of any engine. While at Wayne State University, Bob was on the fencing team; an art he later passed on to his wife and daughter, Jeannie. He especially loved the outdoors and was always happy to be fishing, boating, hiking or mountain biking, especially with his daughter.
The son of a Scottish immigrant father, Bob was proud of his Celtic heritage. In 1989, Bob and his family made a pilgrimage to England and Scotland, and for his last birthday at the care center, his family threw him a Scottish-themed birthday party complete with a bagpiper.
Bob had a strong faith and was a long-time member of the Northfield Alliance Church (now Cornerstone Community Church), where he served in various capacities, including adult Sunday School teacher, deacon and elder.
On Friday morning, April 29th, 2016, Bob passed away at the Northfield Hospital Long Term Care Center, at the age of 77, surrounded by his loving wife and daughter. He is survived by his wife Dava, of 48 years; his daughter Jeannie, of Northfield; his nephew Howard Maxwell (Janice Schroeder) of North Bend, WA; his brother-in-law, Dr. Donald Callen, of Bowling Green, OH; as well as other family members and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents; his sister Dorothy Phyllis; and nephew Robert Maxwell.
A celebration of Bob’s life will be held at the Northfield Hospital Long Term Care Center on Saturday, May 14th, 2016 beginning at 2 PM. Visitation will be in the Care Center Chapel, 30 minutes prior to the service. Interment will take place at a later date.
All memorials should be made to the Northfield Hospital Long Term Care Center.
