His formative years were spent in South Whitley until at age 12 when the family moved to Lineville, Alabama. His mother died when he was 14. He then attended St. Andrews Military Academy in Tennessee.
He returned to South Whitley and worked for International Harvester in Fort Wayne until enlisting in the United States Marine Corps on March 27, 1944. He served in the Pacific Theater and fought in the battles of Okinawa, Saipan, Tinian and Ryukyu Islands. After the war ended, he participated in the occupation of Japan and was honorably discharged August 4, 1946.
He returned to South Whitley and his job at International Harvester. On March 21, 1947 he was united in marriage to Mary Louise Weber. They have always made their home in South Whitley, moved to their present home in 1950.
In 1949 he started Stephens Repair and Welding until 1962 when he became a mechanic for South Whitley Trucking. In 1978 he reopened Stephens Repair and Welding until his retirement in 1986.
A 50 year member of the Cleveland Township Fire Department, he served as an assistant chief. He was also a member of Collamer Christian Church, Indiana Volunteer Firefighters Association, 2nd Marine Division Association and V.F.W. Post #2919.
