Karl Walser was a symbolist painter, who became successful as a muralist, stage designer and illustrator. He studied art and decoration in Strasbourg and Stuttgart, and became a member of the 'Berliner Secession' in 1903. He was a close friend of German expressionist painter Max Beckmann, who strongly influenced his work. Sadly, most of Karl Walser's earlier works were lost during World War II. Some of his paintings are on permanent display at the NMB Neues Museum Biel. Karl Walser is a brother of the famous modernist writer Robert Walser (Find A Grave Memorial# 15317426), for whom he crated many book covers. He married Hedwig Agnes Czarnetzki (1885-1987) in 1910. His parents where Adolf Walser, from Appenzell Ausserrhoden, and Elisa Walser, née Marti, from the Emmental.
