He was a member of the 1948 NFL Champion Eagles. During that game, Steele intercepted a pass on the final play to help seal the victory against the Chicago Cardinals. During his high school years, he was a stand out basketball player and track star. In a career 69 regular season games, Steele had 258 rushes for 1337 yards and 14 touchdowns.
