Early Chicago pioneer settler. Born in Bath, Steuben Co., New York. In 1845, traveling by prairie schooner, Joseph, his father, John Rutherford, his mother, Eliza Ann Lovett Rutherford, and younger brother, Thomas Andrew Rutherford, made their way to the NW area of Chicago, Illinois settling in Jefferson Township. The family was one of the early pioneer families to settle in the prairie lands west of Chicago. He purchased several hundred acres in the Mont Clare area of Jefferson Twp. and was a farmer. He married his brother's wife's older sister, Emily "Emma" Gertrude Merrill, 3 NOV 1880. Believing herself barren, Emily and Joseph were delighted with the birth of their only child, John Joseph Rutherford in 1890, 10 years after they were married. Unfortunately, Joseph died when his son was only 2 years old. Joseph's brother, Thomas, stepped in and became the lad's life-long surrgate father. Joseph was a good man who led a quiet life as a father, husband, son, brother and kind neighbor and farmer.
