1st Sgt Winney enlisted into the US Army on November 5, 1872 in New York NY. He was described as 5'4", gray eyes, brown hair & dark complexion.

On December 9, 1872, Winney reported for duty at Yorkville SC & was assigned to Company K, 7th US Cavalry. On September 15, 1875, Winney was promoted from sergeant to Company K First Sergeant.

At the Battle of the Little Bighorn, Company K was attached to Capt Frederick Benteen's battalion. During the evening of June 25, 1876, on Reno's Hill, Winney was speaking with his commanding officer, Lt Edward Godfrey, when he was shot & instantly killed.

After the battle, those killed while fighting on Reno's Hill were first buried in a depression, where the field hospital had been located. It is likely this is where Winney was first buried.

In 1881 all known battlefield burials were moved to a mass grave on Last Stand Hill.
