Sgt Wilkinson enlisted into the US Army on January 5, 1872 in Troy NY. He was described as 5'7", gray eyes, dark brown hair and a florid complexion. His civilian occupation was listed as farmer.

On February 5, 1872, Wilkinson reported for duty at Unionville SC & was assigned to Company M, 7th US Cavalry. On November 22, 1872, he was promoted to corporal. On September 26, 1874, Wilkinson was transferred to Company F, 7th US Cavalry. On November 8, 1875, he was promoted to sergeant. His daily duties were listed as company mess sergeant.

At the Battle of the Little Bighorn Company F was attached to LTC George Armstrong Custer's battalion. Sometime during the fighting Wilkinson was killed.

After the battle most of Company F was found on or near Last Stand Hill.

Wilkinson's remains were not recorded as being identified. It is likely that his unidentified remains were first buried where they had been found.

In 1881 all known battlefield burials were moved to a mass grave on Last Stand Hill.

On November 18, 1875, Wilkinson had married Maria B. Howard. On November 27, 1877, his wife was awarded a widow's pension.
