Mr. Vernon “Mitch” T. Mitchell, Jr., died Tuesday, May 3, 2016 at Brigham & Women’s Hospital in Boston, with his family by his side. He was the husband of Doris M. (Flanagan) Mitchell, of Lawrence, with whom he shared 31 years of marriage.
Born and raised in Clinton, he was the son of Helen (Blondin) of Clinton and the late Vernon T. Mitchell, Sr. Mitch graduated from Clinton High School with the class of 1980 and earned a Master’s degree in Human Services from Springfield College. He specialized in Substance Abuse & Mental Health Counseling. He also worked as a tax consultant for H&R Block for 13 years and served in the Army National Guard. He was a ham radio operator, enjoyed golfing, camping, and watching sports. Mitch’s true passion was in service to others and in his work within the AA fellowship. He was an active member, leader, and mentor in the AA fellowship and was dedicated to helping others in their addiction recovery.
In addition to his wife and mother, Mitch is survived by his six children, Paul Wright and his wife, Ann of Lawrence, Jill Wright and her partner, Valerie Gordon of Methuen, Kristy Wright and her partner, Henry Ruiz of Lawrence, Stacey Butkowski and her husband, Christopher of N.H., Katie LaPenn and her husband, Toby of N.H., and Ashley Pancorbo and her husband, Alex of Haverhill; 21 grandchildren and one great-grandchild; one aunt, Mary Bodah of Leominster; two cousins, David Bodah and his wife, Amy of Rhode Island, and Cheryl Shaw and her partner, Deb of Rhode Island. He was predeceased by his sister, Gail Mitchell.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend calling hours at the Diaz-Healy Funeral Home, 107 South Broadway, Lawrence on Saturday, May 7 from 1 to 4 p.m. Interment will be private. For directions and condolences, www.DiazHealyFuneralHome.com.
