US Soldier killed at the Battle of the Little Big Horn. Pvt Whaley enlisted into the US Army on September 24, 1873, in Cincinnati, OH. He was described as 5'6", brown eyes, dark hair with a florid complexion. His civilian occupation was listed as farmer. On October 22, 1873, Whaley reported for duty at Ft Totten, Dakota Territory. He was assigned to Company I, 7th US Cavalry Regiment. Company I was commanded by Captain Myles Keogh. At the Battle of the Little Bighorn Company I was attached to LTC George Armstrong Custer's battalion. Sometime during the fighting Whaley was killed. After the battle most of Company I, including Captain Keogh, the company bugler and sergeants, were found in an area between Calhoun Hill and Last Stand Hill. Whaley's remains were not recorded as being identified. It is likely that his unidentified remains were first buried where they had been found.
In 1881 all known battlefield burials were moved to a mass grave on Last Stand Hill.
