On September 14, 1861, Way enlisted as a private into Company I, 1st Ohio Volunteeer Infantry Regiment.

On September 19, 1863, Way was wounded & captured at the Battle of Chickamauga in Georgia. He escaped on December 24, 1864.

After the Civil War Way was released from volunteer service.

On June 5, 1866, Way enlisted into the regular army at Columbus OH. He was described as 5'7", hazel eyes, dark hair & complexion. His civilian occupation was listed as carpenter.

On July 9, 1866, Way reported for duty at Nashville TN & was assigned to Company M, 5th US Cavalry. On July 1, 1867, he was promoted to corporal. Between December of 1867 to June of 1868, records listed Way as under arrest & reduction in rank to private. Between September 1868 & March 1869, Way was listed as sick (fractured left leg). On June 21, 1871, his enlistment expired.

On July 11, 1871, in Chicago IL, Way reenlisted into the army. On December 1, 1872, he was assigned to Company F, 7th US Cavalry at Louisville KY. His daily duties were quartermaster carpenter.

At the Battle of the Little Bighorn, Company F was attached to LTC George Armstrong Custer's battalion. Way was killed sometime during the fighting.

After the battle most of Company F was found on or near Last Stand Hill.

There are no reports that Way's body was identified after the battle. It is likely that his unidentified remains were first buried on the battlefield where they had been found.

In 1881 all known battlefield burials were moved to a mass grave on Last Stand Hill.

Pvt Way was survived by a wife & father. On August 28, 1878, his wife recieved a widow's pension.
