Sgt Warren enlisted into the US Army on September 13, 1873 at Brooklyn NY. He was described as 5'10", hazel eyes, brown hair & dark complexion. His civilian occupation was listed as cooper.

On October 19, 1873, Warren reported for duty at Ft Lincoln in the Dakota Territory. He was assigned to Company L, 7th US Cavalry. Company L was commanded by 1st Lt James Calhoun, brother-in-law to LTC George Armstrong Custer & Capt Tom Custer.

At the Battle of the Little Bighorn, Company L was attached to LTC Custer's battalion. Sometime during the fighting, Warren was kiiled.

After the battle many soldiers from Company L were found on Calhoun Ridge & Calhoun Hill.

Warren's remains were not identified. It is likely that his unidentified remains were first buried where they had been found.

In 1881 all known battlefield burials were moved to a mass grave on Last Stand Hill.
