Pvt Walker's true name was George P. Weldon. He enlisted into the US Army under the alias of Walker on December 12, 1874 at New York NY. He was described as 5'6", gray eyes, brown hair & a florid complexion. His civilian occupation was hostler.

On February 8, 1875, Walker reported for duty at Opelika Ala & was assigned to Company E, 7th US Cavalry. Company E would later be called the Gray Horse Troop, because of the gray horses they rode.

At the Battle of the Little Bighorn, Company E was attached to LTC George Armstrong Custer's battalion. Sometime during the fighting Walker was killed.

Walker's remains were not listed as being identified. It is likely that his unidentified remains were buried where they had been found.

In 1881 all known battlefield burials were moved to a mass grave on Last Stand Hill.

Later battlefield excavations & Lakota/Cheyenne acounts of the battle revealed that Company E conducted a well organized and heavily fought rearguard action towards Last Stand Hill.

On October 4, 1887, Walker's mother was awarded a survivor's pension.

FAG Contributor #47170716 provided the following information:

George lied about his place of birth. He was the youngest son of John Weldon and Margaret Plunkett of New York, NY, and where their three youngest children were born. George's brother Thomas, was the Vicar-General of Convents of the Archdiocese of New Orleans. His obituary verifies that his brother, George, was killed while serving with Custer.
