On April 22nd 2016, the world lost a bright ray of sunshine. To us she was a mother, grandmother, wife, and a beloved aunt. To others she was a helpful and caring friend. To the world she was a compassionate angel who devoted her love, energy, and talent to help with anyone in need. And to all she was a kind and gentle soul.
Charlotte Temple (Harrison) Garrett was born in Minneapolis, Minnesota on July 24th, 1923. She was one of five children born to William and Audie Harrison. Struggling during the Great Depression, the family moved to Oklahoma and eventually to Wheatland, Missouri where they acquired a small farm. As a tom-boy of sorts, she happily worked with her dad as his farm-hand while the older girls helped their mother domestically. She had a special bond with her father and he lovingly referred to her as “Tot” for the remainder of his life. She was also very, very close to her sister Anne and the two sisters completed their education together as classmates.
Charlotte graduated high school in the spring of 1941. Encouraged by their father to become financially independent, Charlotte and Anne both matriculated that fall. Charlotte initially began her education to become a school teacher while Anne pursued her interest of nursing at another school. Before the end of her first semester however, the attack on Pearl Harbor changed her life forever. Her college was commandeered by the Army and the school was subsequently closed. Given this, Charlotte’s father encouraged her to follow her sister Anne into the nursing program, negotiating with the logic: “We’ll only have to use one stamp.” Again reunited with her sister, Charlotte graduated from Drury College in Springfield, Missouri in 1945. She became a Registered Nurse and the courageous young woman her father expected.
In 1950, after moving to Denver, Charlotte’s sister Anne and her husband Howard Gardner introduced her to a dashing young Airman stationed at Lowery Field. After just a few months of courtship, Charles Garrett proposed and the two eloped to New Mexico for a whirlwind marriage and honeymoon. Together, they raised three children and on December 9th, 2015, they celebrated their 65th Anniversary.
As a career military family the group traveled the U.S. and the world living in Colorado, Texas, Florida, Georgia, Oregon, and France. The family was introduced to Idaho when they transferred to Mountain Home in 1966 for their last military assignment. Charlotte continued her nursing career at Elmore Memorial Hospital from 1967 to 1978. After the couple’s full retirement in 1985, the two pursued their passion for travel by visiting much of North America in one of their many RV’s. Eventually the two came to own homes in both Boise and Arizona, migrating with the seasons.
Charlotte Garrett passed peacefully in her sleep on April 22nd 2016 at the age of 92 having lived a full and honorable life. She is preceded in death by her parents William and Audie Harrison and her sisters Virginia Paxton and Anne Gardner. She is survived by her husband Charles Garrett, brothers William Harrison and Ralph Harrison, and her children Barbara Garrett, Garet Garrett, and John Garrett. She is also survived by an extended family whom she loved very much. A celebration of her life will be held at the home of Garet and Linda Garrett at 10930 W. Vega Lane, Star, Idaho 83669 on Sunday, May 8th from 3PM to 6PM.
