Pvt Tarbox enlisted into the U.S. Army at Boston MA on September 22, 1875. He was described as 5'6" tall, gray eyes, dark hair and fair complexion. His civilian occupation was listed as shoemaker.

On October 29, 1875, he reported for duty at Ft Totten in the Dakota Territory and & was assigned to Company L, 7th U.S. Cavalry. Company L was commanded by Lt James Calhoun, brother-in-law of LTC George Custer and Capt Tom Custer.

At the Battle of the Little Bighorn Company L was attached to Custer's Battalion. Sometime during the battle Tarbox was killed.

After the battle most of Company L was found on or near Calhoun Ridge & Calhoun Hill.

Tarbox's remains were never reported as being identified. It is likely his unidentified remains were first buried where they had been found on the battlefield.

In 1881 all known battlefield burials were moved to a mass grave on Last Stand Hill.
