David Campbell Van Derlip was the 10th child of Elias and Sarah Adams Van Derlip.

He was married to Juliana Adelia Cook in December 1836. She was born April 10, 1815, the daughter of Captain Jeremiah Halsey Cook and Mary Rogers.

The Express published on November 30, 1902: Judge Van Derlip was among the State's leading lawyers in the earlier days, in those days when Texas was a Republic and after the annexation. He fought for Texas Independence against Mexico, and was a member of the first Texas Legislature. He died Feb. 24, 1856, and was then a partner in law with the late Judge N. O. Green, father of the present County Judge."
