On 17 Sept 1695 he was chosen as Town Clerk, Deerfield, MA. His residence in 1704 was lot 30, Deerfield, MA. On 29 Feb 1703/4 he was captured by Indians(Abenakis and Macquas), Deerfield, MA. In 1706 he was released from captivity by Ens. John Sheldon. Soon after his release he was made Deacon of the Deerfield church. On 8 Feb 1679 he took the oath of allegiance, at Northampton, MA. He was made a freeman with John & Samuel.

His first wife was Mary Catlin French, daughter of John Catlin Jr and Mary Baldwin Catlin. She was captured at Deerfield as well, and died on the march to Canada.

His second wife was Hannah Atkinson Edwards Stebbins French. She was the widow of Joseph Edwards, and of Benoni Stebbins, who was also killed at the Deerfield Massacre.

His parents were John French and Freedom Kingsley French of Rehoboth and Northampton.

Children(by first marriage): Mary French(died young), Mary French, Thomas French Jr, Freedom French DaVeluy, Martha French Roi Meanard, Abigail French, and John French.

Freedom, Martha, and Abigail were all captured at Deerfield, marched to Canada, and never returned. Freedom and Martha married and had large families. Abigail assimilated in to an Indian way of life and never married. Mary and Thomas were also captured and marched to Canada, but were redeemed in 1716. The baby John was killed.
