The first record of John Tomson in New England appears to be the 1643 list of men able to bear arms for Plymouth. John was a lieutenant.

John was fined for incontinency with wife before marriage, which indicates their first child was born too soon after marriage.

The will of John Tomson senior of "Middlebury" dated 23 April 1696, sworn 8 July 1696, names wife Mary Tomson; sons John, Jacob, Thomas and Peter; daug. Mary Tabor; dau. Ester Reed; dau. Elizabeth Swift; grandson Thomas Swift; daug. Sarah Tomson; d aug. Lidia Soul; dau. Mercy Tomson.

An agreement dated 19 June 1696 about the estate is signed by John Tomson, Elizabeth Swift (mark), Jacob Tomson, Sarah Tomson, Thomas Tomson, James Soule , Peter Tomson, Thomas Tabor, Marcy Tomson (mark) and William Read.
