Collins and his small family lived in Anchorage, Alaska for 14 months where Lorraine was born. Collins served his country in the Army as a Storekeeper Chief during the Korean War from 1951 to 1953. When Collins was released from the Army the family moved to Salt Lake City, Utah and after a year there they moved to Cedar City, Utah where he attended college and received a two year degree. Next, they moved to Logan, Utah where he attended Utah State University. He graduated there with his Bachelors' of Science degree in Engineering. He taught Industrial Arts in Cedar City, Utah for the next seven years before moving to Mesa, Arizona where he taught Industrial Arts at the Mesa Junior High School.
