Marvin J. Elzinga Sr., 85, of Traverse City, formerly of Ellsworth, died July 8, 1993, at Munson Medical Center in Traverse City.

Funeral will be held 11:30 a.m. Saturday, July 10, at Belltower Reformed Church with Celia M. Hastings officiating. Interment will be in Atwood Cemetery.

Mr. Elzinga was born Jan. 26, 1908, in Ellsworth, the son of James and Jessie (Wassenaar) Elzinga.

On June 23, 1934, in St. Ignace, he married Isabel M. Roo, and she survives.

He served as postal officer at the Fort Hamilton, N.Y., base and also served as postmaster in Ellsworth for 40 years, building a new post office in 1959.

He was a member of Belltower Reformed Church, post service officer of the Jansen-Richardson American Legion Post No. 488 until his retirement; he was a life member. He was secretary of the Ellsworth Community School Board for 22 years and a member of the Ellsworth Lions Club until his retirement. He served on the Antrim County Selective Service Board following World War II. In 1983, he was appointed by Judge Unger to the Soldiers and Sailors Relief Fund Committee.

Survivors include his wife; four sons, Marvin J. Jr. of Conway; William E. "Chuck" of Columbia, Md.; Steven D. of Lambertville and Terry R. of Jamesville, N.Y.; eight grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; three brothers, Henry L. of Lansing, Arthur R. of Belding and Herbert C. of Lowell; two sisters, Comelia Raymer of Charlevoix and Maxine J. Elzinga of Traverse City.

Memorial contributions may be made to The Belltower Reformed Church. Envelopes will be available at the Hastings Funeral Home in Ellsworth where friends may call 7- 9 p.m. today, July 9.
