On October 21, 1875, Saunders was assigned to Company F, 7th US Cavalry Regiment at Fort Lincoln Dakota Territory. His daily duties were listed as company cook. Company F was commanded by Captain George Yates. At the Battle of the Little Bighorn, Company F was attached to the LTC George A Custer's battalion. Saunders was killed during the battle. He was likely killed where the majority of his company had died, in the area of Last Stand Hill. Saunder's remains were never reported as being identified. He was probably buried on the battlefield, where his body was found. In 1881 all known battlefield burials were moved to a mass grave on Last Stand Hill.
