Daniel grew up in Illinois where he worked as a carpenter. During the Civil War, he served in the 20th Illinois Infantry and suffered a battle wound to his ankle at Shiloh that left him partially disabled. He married Mary A. Boultinghouse on 12 July 1865 in DuPage County, Illinois. They became the parents of four children: Anna, Peter, Gertrude (who died in infancy), and Walter. Along with his wife Mary's family, he left to claim land in Osborne County, Kansas. Then, three tragedies struck: the burning down of his home in early 1874, his wife's accidental death a few months later, and the death of his young son Peter the following year. He sent his daughter to live with relatives in Chicago and Walter was adopted by a childless couple. He then moved to Colorado where he was shot and killed in 1880 leaving his young wife and two small children alone.
