Frances Charlotte May, age 90, died on April 30, 2016 at Brandon Wilde retirement community in Evans, Georgia.
She was born in Lincolnton, Georgia, the youngest child of Mrs. Mabel Groves May and Dr. Ellis Roberts May.
She is survived by a sister, Camille May Lane of Millen, Georgia; nieces and nephew, Jeni Lane Chambers of Millen, Jody Ann Lane (Elmer Schleich) of Savannah, Lisa Lane Thurman (Woody) of Louisville, Georgia, Cheryl May Eggart (Steve) of Milton, Florida, and Charles H. May, Jr. of Boligee, Alabama; great nephews and nieces, Sidney Woodrow Thurman (Leslie), Camille Thurman Leonard (Jake), Ellis Lane Chambers (Stacia), Billy Eggart, Carla Eggart Rials (George), Maggie Eggart McLaughlin (Brad) ; and great, great nieces and nephews.
Charlotte is predeceased by her parents and her brothers Charles H. May, Joe C. May, Ellis R. May, Jr. and John M. May.
She received a Bachelor’s Degree in Education from Georgia College and State University, then Georgia State College for Women, and taught in elementary schools for 38 years, most of that time in Augusta, Georgia. In addition to the usual classroom curriculum, she loved singing with her young pupils and teaching them good manners and respect for others.
Charlotte was a life member of the Richmond County Retired Educators Association, the Georgia Fidelis Kappa for Educators (disbanded), the National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution, and the Lincoln County Historical Society. From childhood until her health decline of the last two years, she was a very active member of the Lincolnton Presbyterian Church where she served as an Elder and Church Treasurer. Although this required a commute of some 75 miles, she faithfully served well into her eighties and was honored by the church with her personal reserved parking space next to the door where she entered.
Throughout her life, she willingly accepted the care of her aging parents, a brother and his wife, along with other extended family members for shorter periods of time. With her own health failing in recent years, Charlotte continued characteristically to offer her beautiful smile and graciousness to those around her.
Interment was in the family section of the Lincolnton City Cemetery.
