Dr. Donald Ellsworth Bigelow, O.D. of Anchorage, Alaska, and Bradenton, Fla., passed away in his home on May 1, 2016, after a lengthy battle with lung cancer. A 1964 graduate of Norwich University in Northfield Vt., he was commissioned 2nd Lieutenant in the U.S. Army, continuing his studies at Pacific University College of Optometry in Forest Grove, Ore. After serving as an Optometry officer in the U.S. Army, he transferred to U.S. Public Health Service, assigned to the Indian Health Service in Alaska. Dr. Bigelow retired from the USPHS in 1985, as a Captain, and continued his optometry career in Anchorage with Southcentral Foundation. He retired to Bradenton, Fla., in 1999. He is survived by his wife, Susan (Elder) Vallejo of Anchorage and Bradenton. He leaves sons, Andrew Bigelow (Tina) of Bradenton and Christopher Bigelow (Jenifer) of North Bend, Wash.; as well as stepchildren, Tasha Vallejo of Tyler, Texas, and Dax Vallejo of Anchorage. Grandchildren who will miss him greatly in their lives are Nicholas Bigelow and Ashley Bigelow of Bradenton, Evette Dainow-Amundsen of B.C., Canada, Miles Kordus Vallejo of Anchorage and Skye Suzanne Vallejo Yount of Perryville, Mont.; as well as great-granddaughter, Lucia Yount.
