William Henry “Sandy” Sandmann, born 15 January 1928, at Yakima in Yakima County, Washington and died on 21 March 2014, at Port Townsend in Jefferson County, Washington. “Sandy” graduated from Reed College at Portland, Oregon and received a Ph.D in nuclear physics from University of Utah at Salt Lake City. As a physics professor he taught at Iowa State University in Grinell, Iowa for a few years and in 1963 transferred to Harvey Mudd College in Claremont, California where he taught for 30 years. While at Harvey Mudd College, he switched his specialty from nuclear physics to start the college’s observational astronomy program. He was largely responsible for the large 40-inch telescope installed at the Table Mountain Observatory at Wrightwood, California jointly operated by NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory, Pomona College, and Harvey Mudd College. He married on 12 September 1953, at Vancouver in Clark County, Washington his first wife, Beverly Joyce Young (1932-2007). They were the parents of three daughters before their marriage ended in divorce. William “Sandy” Henry Sandmann married in 1988, his second wife, Pat Louise Watson.
