Statesman and Author. Born in Gijón, Asturias, Spain, he served as Minister of Justice under King Carlos IV. He was also an important representative of the Illustration movement and a leading social reformer. A close friend of the painter Francisco de Goya, he was imprisoned for his work against the Spanish monarchy and later exiled for opposing Napoleon's occupation of his country. As an author he is remembered for "El Delincuente Honrado", "Pelayo", "Elogios", and "Memorias del Castillo de Bellver". He died in Puerto de Vega, Asturias, shortly before the proclamation of Spain's liberal Constitution of 1812.
