Jon, 76, of Delta Township, passed away Sunday, May 1 after a brief illness. Roger was the eldest son of Glenn and Verda (Stitzer) Howell.

He grew up on a dairy farm. He graduated from Fennimore High School in 1958 and received his bachelor’s degree from University of Wisconsin at Platteville in 1962.

He met his wife, Dixie, during college and they married on August 1, 1964. She predeceased him on January 7, 2012. Roger and Dixie lived in many places in Wisconsin and Michigan, but he has called Delta Township home since 1978.

Roger was retired from the USDA, working in the Soil Conservation Service as a soil conservationist, a district conservationist and a public information officer. Family members recall how he needed to stop the car to take photos wherever he saw soil erosion. He loved to photograph everyone and everything. Everywhere he went, whether professional or social, he had his camera.

Roger believed in community service. He was a member of the Soil and Water Conservation Society for over 50 years serving one year as President. He was leader with Boy Scout Troop 111 and both of his sons were Eagle Scouts.

He took leadership roles with Jaycees in several communities until he became an “exhausted rooster”. He was a member of First United Methodist Church on Delta River Drive for nearly 40 years, serving on the Board of Trustees and taking charge of the annual Sauerkraut Supper for 9 years.

After retiring he volunteered with the National Active and Retired Federal Employees group and with the Michigan Envirothon. He and Dixie served as resident lighthouse keepers through the Sable Points Lighthouse Keepers Association.

Roger and Dixie walked regularly at places like Hunter’s Orchard Park, Hawk Meadows Park and the Riverfront Walk. For many years they exercised with the Lansing Mall exercise group. They walked the Mackinac Bridge on Labor Day eight times.

Roger still enjoyed splitting his own firewood and having a fire in the fireplace in the evening.

Surviving are his children, Leslie (Ernest) Delemeester; Kim (Joel) Murray; Christopher “CJ” Howell; grandchildren, August, Mitchell, Garrett and Natalie Delemeester; Connor and Elaina Murray; Preston and Amelia Howell; siblings Jane Ann Howell; Neil (Marilyn) Howell; Robert (Sue) Howell; Clyde (Ellen) Howell; Marirose Howell; and his mother-in-law Myra Hill.

He was predeceased by his wife Dixie, son Scot, brother Paul, and his parents.

Funeral services were conducted Friday, May 6 at First United Methodist Church with Pastor Lori Sykes officiating. Interment followed at Hillside Cemetery in Delta Mills

Memorial contributions may be made to Sable Points Lighthouse Keepers Association or his church.
