Emily was born in December of 1981. She had recently moved to Oregon with her girlfriend Emily Doran. She was in the midst of a very happy time in her life. Never was there a sweeter, more caring, more genuine person then Emily. Never was there a brighter smile or a warmer hug. Her intelligence, her sense of humor, her sense of decency—these ran so deep. Emily had so much left to do in this world

Emily and her girlfriend were involved in a fatal car accident on Sunday, September 25th, 2005 at 6:00pm in the evening. Having just moved to Portland, Oregon barely two months prior, the girls were on their way back from the Pacific coast when an auto collision occurred. The other driver, an 18yr old male, crossed the yellow line and hit the girls' Geo Prism as they were heading east on Oregon 6 about 18 miles east of Tillamook, OregonState Police said. Emily Doran was driving the Geo, and Emily Richardson was a passenger. An RV driving behind Emily and Emily was unable to stop—crashing into them from behind. These collisions took place within seconds of each other and Emily and her girlfriend Emily Doran were killed instantly. Both were pronounced dead at the scene.

Emily was a 2004 graduate of Hampshire College in Massachusettes and a photographer. An memorial exhibition of her photography and Emily Doran's writing was displayed at Hampshire College in September 2006. As an additional memorial, the families and friends of Emily and Em have planted a tree and placed a stone bench on the lawn between the Robert Crown Center and Emily Dickinson Hall, on the Hampshire College campus.
